Dental Information


After an extraction it is extremely important to follow some guidelines to allow the treated are to heal faster and to prevent any painful consequences; therefore, here are some guidelines about what do do and not to do after an extraction.  Please view the video below and read the instructions to help you answer any questions you may have.


  • Place cold towels or an ice bag to your face on affected area for the first 6-8 hours. Apply for 15 minutes, and then remove it for 15 minutes.

  • Do not rinse mouth or brush your teeth until the following day.

  • On the morning following surgery, rinse mouth with warm salt water [1/2 teaspoon salt to a glass of warm water]. Repeat this several times daily.

  • Keep fingers and tongue away from socket.

  • BLEEDING- It is normal for saliva to be slightly streaked with blood for 1-2 days. For the first couple of hours after extraction [s], place one-two moist gauze[s] and change it every 20- 30 minutes until bleeding stops. If abnormal bleeding occurs, place moist gauze over extraction site and bite down for 30-45 minutes.

  • Following dental surgery it is normal to experience some discomfort. If medication has been prescribed, please take as instructed.

  • SWELLING & STIFFNESS- It is normal and should not cause alarm. Apply cold towels or ice bag for 15 minutes of each hour as needed. If the swelling progresses please be sure to come back to office for Doctor to check on swelling.

  • DIET- A liquid or soft diet is advisable during the first 24 hours. Drink lots of fluids, especially cold rather than warm. Avoid Drinking from a straw. Please drink from a cup

  • Avoid any soft drinks or carbonated drinks, alcohol or beer, or tobacco.

  • Avoid any Smoking, Sucking, or heavy chewing on side of extraction area for the first couple of days following dental surgery.

  • Return to the office if undue symptoms develop.

  • You will be schedule to come back to our office a week after extraction. Please do not miss this appointment.
